Happy New Year

 Hello Robotics students.

Welcome to 2022.

Introductory

Check PowerSchool for your current update on what you still need to accomplish this semester.

If you are all caught up and want to go ahead of things you can start working on the Robotics Applications 1 Bonus Credit. It has three parts:

  • There are two options here: One for general robot research and another for those affiliated with, or interested in, the FTC Robotics Teams.
  • Do not do both assignments, choose one or the other.
  • Presentations go in your ePortfolio in either Slides or Doc format (not speaking portion to this presentation).
  • Watch the videos, answer the questions in an ePortfolio Doc.
  • Two options here: Either an advanced TinkerCAD circuit (Infrared remote control), or an FTC Robot CAD (in Fusion 360).
The credit is optional and students who don't finish all of it this year will do it as their first project in Intermediate Robotics.
All Robotics - Introductory work will be due by Monday January 17th. Extensions will be given for those that communicate the need for an extension to me before that deadline.

Intermediate/Advanced

Check Powerschool for an update on which outcomes and work you need to complete this month.

Week of October 4th to 7th

As we ease our way into the second month of this new school year it is time for many students to start looking at their next steps after high school.

The work for this week will be all about exploring post-secondary opportunities.

At the end of the week, students should be able to answer the following question:

  • What are three possible programs that I am interested in for post-secondary and why do I want to go through those programs.

This question will help guide our resume and cover letter work next week.

Here are some resources for students to explore: (post to D2L as needed or access via https://WaysConnect.blogspot.com )

  • Many students will be looking at this option. You may want to have a conversation with students about what university entails and why it may or may not be the best path.

  • Many students attended the UCalgary session in YOUnited time, they may have some insights from that session.

  • Attached is the Fall 2021 final admission averages for UCalgary. This is especially valuable information especially for grade 11s as they are coming up on a time when they may need a target for their post-secondary admissions.

  • This site has a ton of resources and is very mobile friendly for students to access on phones.

  • Make sure that students know that SAIT offers many four year bachelors degrees, which many student are aiming for including a BSc in Construction Management and a BA in Travel and Tourism. Mandela alumni are currently either in or have graduated from both programs.

  • This is a good place to discuss apprenticeships and skilled trades as well

  • Open House October 27th https://www.sait.ca/future-students/discover-campus/open-house

  • MRU has some exceptional programs. A few that students know about include their Aviation(flight) programs, as well as a bachelors in computer information systems, midwifery, interior design, and criminal justice (among others)

  • Open House October 30th https://www.mtroyal.ca/Admission/OpenHouse/

Why Choose Bow Valley College: https://bowvalleycollege.ca/

  • Bow Valley’s Open House is October 16th virtual. https://bowvalleycollege.ca/admissions/visit-bow-valley-college

  • Some excellent programs at BVC.

  • If you have any students looking at the Registered Practical Nurse program, take note that it usually does its application in August the year before an intake (so August 2022 for the Fall 2023 intake).

  • This is also a good time to chat with students about the difference between competitive admission programs and first-come-first-qualified-first-served programs. (all university level programs are competitive, many diploma and certificate programs are not)

These are the big four in Calgary. If students are looking for more specific programs or to spread their wings a bit further feel free to have them bring in and share some research around some of the other institutions:

  • Alberta University of the Arts (formerly ACAD – at SAIT’s campus)

  • University of Lethbridge

  • Olds College

  • Red Deer College

  • University of Alberta

  • Grant MacEwan University

  • NAIT

This work should take a class or two this week. Some students will take seconds to complete it (because they are so laser focused on this already), while some will need to time to explore and answer the question.

  • What are three possible programs that I am interested in for post-secondary and why do I want to go through those programs.

Any post-secondary questions, please don’t hesitate to reach out.

Cheers.

The Connect-ions team.
